Thoughts About Watchmen

During our class discussion of "Watchmen," I decided to download the Kindle, desktop version, as I was expecting it to be just another book. However, I was very suprised to learn that it was actually a comic book. A I discussed in my portfolio video, I had never read a comic book before, and wasn't sure what to expect. My tweet above refers to my experience with reading "Watchmen," as that's what I learned comic book reading was- an experience. It was difficult for me to get the full effect of the words on the page, the organization and flow of the blocks, and the illustrations while reading on my computer. As we discussed the book in class, I realized these things were essential to fully appreciating the book, so I decided to buy the physcial copy. Where typical books rely essentially full on your own mind and interpretation of things since they are simply words on a page, reading  "Watchmen" was much more than reading words, as when I had the physical copy, it turned into a much more interactive experience. "Watchmen" was also especially interesting to read after doing our unit that put "No Country For Old Men," the movie and book, in conversation with each other. In that unit we focused a lot on the differences in words and actions, and how the movie of "No Country For Old Men" was able to put action to words that were more of a stream of consciousness. The juxtaposition between movie and book was interesting to see in conversation with "Watchmen," as it merged the two together. It most definitely gave me an understanding of literature as something more than words or actions in a movie that were taken from words- but as something that can be a fusion of the two as well.
